History

Fine Arts In Rockbridge was founded as a non-profit organization in 1971 by a group of Lexington arts supporters led by Charlene Jarrett. Its mission, then and now, is to “provide opportunities for all persons in the Rockbridge area to pursue their interests and develop their talents in the arts through quality educational and performance opportunities.” Among the group’s first—and most lasting—accomplishments were the founding of the Rockbridge Symphony and the creation of the first Summer FAIR children’s arts camp, both of which remain local institutions more than four decades later. Over the years, FAIR also played a significant role in the formation of a number of other local arts groups, including the Rockbridge Ballet, the Rockbridge Choral Society, Rockbridge Modern Dance Ensemble and Footlight Productions. Today, Fine Arts In Rockbridge proudly counts among its current member organizations the Symphony, the Ballet, the Rockbridge Youth Strings, (540) Productions and Progeny Dance. In addition, FAIR continues to offer Summer FAIR classes for three weeks every July, helps coordinate after-school arts education, loans instruments free of charge to school music programs and presents special events such as the 2014 Route 11 Dance Festival, which was highlighted by a performance featuring Dance Theatre of Harlem and the Rockbridge Symphony. In 2015, the Alpha Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society founded at Washington & Lee University, presented FAIR with the James G. Leyburn Award for outstanding service to the community. Fine Arts In Rockbridge welcomes the support of individuals and organizations interested in promoting the arts in our community.
